KENAI ALASKA
HOME OF THE
WORLD RECORD FISH |
 |
Welcome to Kenai, Alaska, an old Russian community, located in south
central Alaska, and on the western side of the Kenai Peninsula.
This area is the home of the "Kenai King" salmon (Kenai River)
and the world's largest halibut (Cook Inlet). Sports fisherman from around the world come
to Kenai to test their skills on these world class fish.
The King salmon (Chinook) season starts May 15 and ends July 31,
followed by the popular red salmon (Sockeye) during the latter part of July and early
August. The silver salmon (Coho) run starts in late July and runs through September. The
pink salmon run only on the even numbered years and can be caught from late July through
August. Halibut, cod, pike, trout, char, grayling and a variety of other fish are
available throughout the summer months.
Wildlife is abundant on the beautiful Kenai Peninsula and you may see
moose, caribou, bears, eagles, wolves, mountain goats, Dall sheep, whales, beaver, otter,
lynx, ducks, geese, swans and a host of other critters.
 |
This is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. You can see
glaciers, mountains, lakes, streams, volcanoes, forests, tundra, flowers berries, northern
lights, and endless beauty and history.
The Kenai Peninsula offers fishing, hunting, camping, boating, canoeing,
photography, golf, skiing, tours, sightseeing, swimming, hiking, biking, berry picking,
rock hounding, gold panning, antiques, and lots of fun! |
You
can watch the herds of white (Beluga) whales come into the mouth of the Kenai River, view
the off-shore oil platforms in Cook Inlet, tour Old Fort Kenai, stop by "Moosemeat
Johns" cabin, Kenai Joes bars, and the Salty Dog Saloon, all old landmarks of the
past. You can see the fishing fleets come and go, watch the annual arrival of the
beautiful snow geese on the Kenai Flats, go clam digging, and fish 'til your heart's
content.
Kenai has a variety of shops, grocery stores, services, and a large
airport with over 100 flights a day - 70 bound for Anchorage.
